FAQ on Selecting an Officiant

May 21, 2011

Q: We are getting married! Who can assist us in performing our “I Do’s”?

A: Rev. Bonnie is uniquely qualified to assist both same-sex and opposite-sex couples in creating and officiating their special day! She has performed dozens of weddings since same-sex marriage became legal in Washington DC—in fact, she celebrated the very first public wedding on the courthouse plaza the first day they were permitted.

Q: What exactly is an Interfaith Minister?

A: An Interfaith Minister is a seminary trained individual who has taken courses and studied texts of various faith traditions in order to better understand life, death, healing, and celebration rituals. They have studied for a minimum of two years, and are evaluated by seminary staff. An Interfaith Minister is available to officiate a spiritual/religious ceremony or one that has no spiritual/religious references at all.

Note: An Interfaith Minister does not buy their credentials off of the internet. They have made a life commitment to this path, not one of opportunity. Rev. Bonnie is fully committed to this work—it is not a past time or fad for her.

Q: If we use an Interfaith Minister does that mean our ceremony has to be spiritual/religious?

A: No. Rev. Bonnie has officiated at many ceremonies where the brides/grooms have requested that no references to God or a higher power be incorporated.

Q: What can we expect when we partner with Rev. Bonnie as our officiant?

A: You can expect:

** Her knowledge and expertise as an Interfaith Minister and her familiarity with the customs and rituals of many faith traditions.

** A track record of exemplary service—from the initial meeting through the final “I Do’s”.

** An ability to create the ceremony you desire–not a cookie cutter “one size fits all” rubber stamp.

** Resources to help you design your vows and ring exchange wording, and suggestions of readings and unique ways to communicate your love for each other.

** Assistance in applying for and picking up your Marriage License from the DC Marriage Bureau if desired.

** A sensitivity and understanding of the Lesbian and Gay community. Rev. Bonnie has lived in the DC area for over 25 years and worked as an advocate for LG civil rights. She was the among the first group of county residents to be inducted into the Montgomery County, MD Human Rights Hall of Fame.

** The experience gleaned from officiating at over 125 weddings since March 2010.
